Buck (they/he) Schulte is a nonbinary multimedia artist living in SE Portland. They create art to foster connection with themself and others through what they describe as a feral empathy practice. Buck began their trajectory as an artist learning traditional painting and drawing, and now create increasingly multimedia assemblage art that questions the parameters of how space is taken up by concepts within the artwork, and how the material chosen questions value judgments about what art is and is made of. Textures and material decisions in congruence with instinct dominate their creative process, and in that regard the majority of artwork Buck generates is made from found and recycled objects. Their work is largely dependent on the materials that they find, and that limitation allows for instinctive generation that culminates in emotional truths. Themes present in their recent sculpture and textile work includes grief, ferality, identity, ghosts, and memory. Their rejection of convention (creating portraiture on found cardboard, for instance) is a constant conversation surrounding both neurodivergence and the assignment of value.

Buck’s low poly video game project, Arid Ghost, began in undergrad. It’s part of their future in game development and film/animation, but they haven’t had time to work on that project recently. It’s in the menu above if you want to try out the 3d space they made in Unity.

Buck has offered graphic design, web design, paint and illustration commissions in the past, but the only custom art they’re doing right now are their polymer painted clay (in)security dogs. If you have an inquiry, please feel free to contact them at their Instagram @saltbat.
